Welcome to
House Rabbit Society where our goal is to make you as happy with a bunny
companion as we are with the bunnies that share our homes and add joy to our
lives!
We
realize that you can go to a store or breeder, plunk down a few dollars and go home
with a bunny. Instant gratification is
the advantage, but the purchase often ends in unhappiness and regret, primarily
because the bunny is not altered, will not use a litter box and behaves badly.
We
believe you deserve better:
1) You deserve a healthy bunny that has been spayed or
neutered
2) You deserve the information you need to be a confident
bunny parent
3) You deserve support after you take bunny home
Adoption
Fee: We include
all the above in your adoption fee of $45 for a single bunny; $95 for a bonded
pair.
Bunny 101: Before you adopt, you will
receive this free class to learn what you need to know. Even if you’ve
had bunnies before, information is always being updated and the House Rabbit
Society stays on the cutting edge of rabbit knowledge. Even experienced rabbit
people have told us that they have learned new things in Bunny 101.
No Pressure: Following
the class, if you decide that a bunny is not the right pet for you, we will
respect your decision.
A Healthy Bunny: The bunny you choose will have a
current health exam from our rabbit-knowledgeable veterinarian. The bunny will
have been treated for external and internal parasites, including coccidia, which is rampant in breeder operations. The bunny
will have been spayed if a girl, neutered if a boy. This is essential for good
health and longevity, using a litter box and eliminating the bad behaviors
common to unfixed rabbits.
Matchmaking: Bunnies have attitudes! They like
some humans and not others. Spending time with several bunnies in our “get
acquainted area” will help you select a bunny that likes you as much as you
like him. If you have a dog, we will introduce the dog to the bunny to ensure
compatibility. Cats normally are not a problem. We will be happy to talk to you
about other pets.
Bunny Bonding: If you have a bunny and want him
to have a companion, you can bring your bunny to be introduced to other
bunnies. Many bunnies will not like each other and introductions can turn
nasty. It is wise to do introductions at our shelter in neutral territory with
people experienced in bunny introductions and bonding.
One-Stop Shop: We sell all the supplies that a
bunny needs. You can purchase from us or elsewhere, and we will tell you what
products are good for bunnies and what products are bad. As an example, a
“rabbit starter cage” can cause ill health and aggression. To avoid wasting money,
it is wise to wait until after your Bunny 101 class to buy supplies.
Support: Our adopters become part of our
bunny-parent family. You can meet other bunny parents at our free meetings in
